EA Overhauls Game Download Service

EA Overhauls Game Download Service
Wednesday, November 1, 2006 5:53 PM EST
The Associated Press
By MAY WONG

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Electronic Arts Inc. is taking the wraps off of a major overhaul to its download service for computer games, signaling the largest video game publisher's commitment to the growing trend of online distribution.

The Redwood City-based company said it plans to officially announce the new portal, EA Link, on Friday, though the retooled service was running Wednesday.

It replaces an earlier service called EA Downloader, the company's admittedly clunky year-old effort at offering downloadable content for its PC games.

With EA Link users can download materials faster, search for products in a more organized fashion, launch purchased games directly, and have their payment information, including a new online payment option through PayPal, linked to their accounts.

The site currently has 16 PC game titles available for download. Any upcoming PC games will be made available on disk at retail stores as well as in a digital version at EA Link — at the same price and on the same day, the company said.

Extra content, such as game demos, trailers, wallpaper and software patches will also be featured.

Digital distribution "is an increasing priority for us at EA and it's a further step in EA's commitment to have a one-on-one relationship with our customers," said Chip Lange, vice president of EA's online division. "The business has gone beyond a static model of 'I've bought the game and I'm done.' This keeps the games dynamic."

Video games, from ones played on computers to those played on console systems, are increasingly offering so-called "episodic" content, where users can tack on extra playing levels or chapters. Accessories used within games, such as weapons or other gear for game characters, are also commonly sold online.

Industrywide, traditional shrink-wrapped PC games in the U.S. retail market are declining with sales falling to $953 million in 2005 from $1.5 billion in 2001, according to the NPD Group. Meanwhile, U.S. sales of PC game downloads are expected to almost double this year to about $500 million and grow to $763 million in 2007, predicted market researcher IDC.

GRAW MP3 Q and A

- Q. Can you detail the new additions to this MP PACK?
A. Siege mode and the Original Ghost Recon Cooperative mode are the two new additions to this final multiplayer pack. Both modes feature 3 levels. Siege is composed of “Strongpoint”, “Avenues” and “Com Station”. OGR Coop. mode feature “Mayday! Mayday!”, “Ready For Bear” and “John Doe’s Hellhole”.

- Q. For those unfamiliar with these modes, could you give us a quick overview of each of them?

A. In OGR Cooperative mode, you and your team-mates face off against hostile soldiers in enemy territory. Your mission is to reach the extraction point.

The rebel troops have taken Camp Chapultepec and are using it as a staging area for their activities in the region. Their presence is increasingly affecting the operations of troops loyal to the Mexican President and the Ghosts are sent to deal with the situation before the rebels can fortify their position.
This mode allows for up to 12 players to play together (3 teams of 4 players)!

In Siege you fight for control of a strategic zone, where one team defends (the Ghosts) while the other attacks (the Mexicans). If the attacking team manages to get inside the zone and survive for more than five seconds, they will win the game.

Both are very popular Ghost Recon modes and we really wanted to deliver these to the community with this last pack.

- Q. Can you detail what type of maps can we expect for the Siege mode?

A. Gamers already know Avenues and Com Station. Both perfectly fit with Siege mode. In addition to these we will also have a new adapted version of the Strongpoint.

Strongpoint offers one of the largest multiplayer levels yet, with some tricky challenges for both defenders and attackers. The besieged team can find good cover within bunkers, making sure the power station they protect is quite the opposite of undefended and will requite true skill win.

- Q. How did you articulate the different OGR Cooperative maps in terms of scenario?

A. Each map has a unique storyline that we hope will immerse the player in the adventure.
In “John Doe’s Hellhole”, the Ghosts are deployed in the suburbs of Mexico City and fight for control of every street corner as they struggle to put an end to the conflict. Snipers overhead make any foray into open streets a lethal risk. With several members down already, these cramped city streets are quickly becoming do or die for the Ghosts.

In “Ready for Bear”, the rebel troops have taken Camp Chapultepec and are using it as a staging area for their activities in the region. Their presence is increasingly affecting the operations of troops loyal to the Mexican President, and the Ghosts are sent to deal with the situation before the rebels can fortify their position. Finally, in “Mayday, Mayday”, a US helicopter was shot down in Chapultepec Park some hours ago and the Ghosts are en route in to investigate. Intelligence has detected heavy enemy activity in the area and it is believed that rebels are moving the remains of the chopper to their stronghold at the castle.

In addition, we extended the arsenal available with the addition of the ZEUS in the OGR Coop. mode. That might be useful in case you meet an enemy tank or something even worse…

- Q. One particular map that you enjoy?

A. My personal favourite is the Hellhole map. It offers some of the most brutal resistance GRAW has ever provided, and makes for some pretty intense fire fights when you and your team-mates try desperately to move forward while covering all rooftops, corners and windows. It really lives up to its name, excellent at getting your heart beating as you sneak around. :-)

- Q. One last thought for the community?

A. At first players may have felt that the multiplayer action we promised was somehow not as strong as they had hoped. This was something we really wanted to rectify; our fans are important to us and have helped us make Ghost the great game that it is. These packs we hope support this sentiment and commitment.

So if you did not enlist yet, my advice is JOIN THE GHOSTS!

GRAW 1.21 Patch with TDM and HH released!!!

Yes you heard it correctly!!! it's been released...
AttackforceZ's Game Server is running TDM with 3 spawns and anticheat on so come in and play!

Here is the info on the patch =>
- Game mode Hamburger Hill added.

- Game mode Team Deathmatch added.

Two new gametypes, Hamburger Hill(HH) and Team Deathmatch(TDM) have been added to the game, along with two brand new maps. Some maps have also been added to multiple gamemodes. In addition the editor has been updated to output maps to these modes.

- Added "Server Info" button in the multiplayer interface, and a "lock" icon to show servers with passwords.

- More sound, grunts and a dying sound has been added when you're getting shot.

- A new "Skip Insertion" option exists for Coop missions.

This option will spawn the players at the last stage of the insertion, just before the mission starts.

- "Death cameras" have been added.

Two new options exists when creating a server, "Members" and "Overview". Overview includes the "Members" option. If deathcams are enabled and a player runs out of lives on a limited spawn server, the player can access the deathcam. It will toggle with mouse1 and mouse2 by default, and you can return to the status screen with "tab".

- A new SLI checkbox exists in the graphics settings to alert the player that SLI is enabled for the game.

Fixes

- Sound settings can now properly be saved.

- Anticheat will now be checked on player spawn to prevent any false positives during map load.

New patch Q and A... Team Death Match and Hamburger Hill

Q.1. First of all, could you please details the big lines of this new MP pack?

A. We have added several playability fixes, notably in the coop mode; we also improved the interface in some cases. For instance the weapon purchase interface in domination has been modified and you will now be able to create custom configurations through XML files. We also included an SLI system which allows an automatic check and update of your drivers. Fans will also be pleased to know that we will introduce a Death Cam, being able to watch through the eyes of your remaining team mates when you are dead and have no respawns left. Last but not least, and this is something fans asked for, we added the possibility to skip intro presentations in coop mode.

Apart from all these we have been mainly working on the two new multiplayer modes, Team Deathmatch and Hamburger Hill. From the beginning our objective was to make GRAW a must have in terms of multiplayer experience and this new pack is a big step in that direction.

Q.2. Can you quickly explain for the new recruits the purpose of the Hamburger Hill mode?

A. Simply, the player / the team who spends the most time in the central area of the map wins. The great thing about HH is that there is no lull; you need to act quickly and tactically in either defensive or offensive situation.

Q.3. Can you detail the new maps present in the Hamburger Hill mode?

A. We developed 3 unique maps and I am sure fans will be happy to know that 2 of them are pretty rural.
HH01-CommStation
This map is an abandoned communication station situated on a cliff near the ocean. It's quite rural, although with some central buildings and roads. A blocked tunnel leads away from the area through the mountains, and the sea blocks the way on the other side. The teams fight for control of the central base, and the area is open and is the most rural map we've done to date.
HH01-The Cape
Again situated near the water, this sea-side barrack complex has only a few buildings situated by hills and the sea. The central cliff is pierced by cliffs running through them to make the map more interesting, and has a "faster game" approach because of the natural choke points.
HH03 ¡V Hollow
This map was already present in the deathmatch mode. This is a valley based map with a central army base/fort like structure. It's got a custom terrain and is in a mountainous area.
Q.4. What is your favourite map and why?

A. My favourite one is the CommStation map and I bet fans will love it since it takes place in a non-urban environment. It was one of the most repeated requests I saw over the net and the forums. It was pretty tricky for us to answer to that specific point since GRAW is, from the beginning, set in an urban environment. But I and the rest of the team behind GRAW are also Ghost Recon fans and I spent nights on the rural maps of the very first episode so I understand how important it is for fans. So I guess you can say this specific map is dedicated to the fans! ļ But to answer your question I have to say I love fighting on a cliff near the ocean!

Q.4. How customizable is the Hamburger Hill mode?

A. We have been working on 4 distinctive HH options that determine the different ways of winning the game. These options can be defined the way the player wants to at start-time.
¡§Classic¡¨ Hamburger Hill (HH)
Team that held the zone the most during a game (ie. earned most points) wins when time runs out.
King of the Hill (KotH)
Team that holds the zone when the time runs out wins.
Complete Objective (CO)
Team first to reach the pre-determined number of points wins.
Tug of War (ToW)
Each team starts with a pre-determined number of points. If a team holds the zone, one team loses a point while the other team gains one. The winner will be the team which is superior in points when there is not enough time for the opposing team to catch up. If a team captures all points, the game is won.
Q.5. Team Deathmatch is the other addition to this package. What can you tell us on this?

A. We have adapted the five original maps from the Domination mode for the Team Deathmatch: Shantytown, Warehouses, Downtown, Avenues and Church. It works absolutely great! In addition we have added 2 maps, ¡§CommStation¡¨ and ¡§Hollow¡¨. With that content, I believe we have a pretty solid DM mode and that fans will surely enjoy it. So I guess I will see you on the battlefield!

GRAW map pack 2 ... small amount of info released

As per http://www.ghostrecon.com/us/

Today we're releasing more information about the GRAW PC Map Pack #2. See below for 2 screenshots, each detailing a new game mode that will be added with the map pack. Additionally, this map pack will implement the kill cam, a feature showing you how you died and who shot you. This pack is still in development, aiming for a release at the end of July or beginning of August.
SCREENSHOT#1
SCREENSHOT#2

And this is a quote by one of the GRin developers

"Just to clarify, it is not a "kill cam" that's been implemented. It's a "death cam", being able to spectate through the eyes of your remaining team mates when you are dead and have no respawns left."
